I was emotionally tired & befuddled after incessantly following the terrorist attack of Mumbai last week. I needed to do something to unwind. I had to do something outside a computer.
When I was faced with this quandary, I remembered one of my old loves, rice writing, a form of microcalligraphy.
Most of you might not have heard of it, so let me give you a primer. :)
Rice writing is the art of writing on a grain of rice. Yes, on a single grain of rice. :) Its actually quite a popular &
old art in India.
If you are in India, you might come across some enterprising people on the pavements or some cultural/heritage locations who write your name on a grain of rice & put it in a key chain.
I have seen them in Tirumala (opp. Le Pakshi store) and in Swabhumi, Kolkata. I have heard of them on the footpath of M.G. Road, Bangalore.
I checked on Wikipedia and found that this is an age old tradition in Turkey and a fine art within the Jewish community.
I am no where near the
"14,164 letters on a single grain of rice" feat achieved by
Bly the Rice Writer, who was also chosen as #3 of the ten best Believe it or Nots by Ripley himself &
one of the performers at the
Odditorium too.
I guess I have been interested in writing pretty small letters from around my early high school days. I used to write my notes in small letters much to the chagrin of my teachers & parents. I was interested in all things small & microscopic. I was the best in class in handling a microscope in the lab & preparing the slides, be they of cheek cells or blood sample or stem cross sections, etc.
I don't remember when or where or how I got the idea, but I started writing on rice may be sometime in my mid teens. And then lost touch with it after joining work.
Now am glad to have rediscovered my old love. I couldn't wait to buy/create my tools. I started practicing on a sheet of paper, having been out of practice of writing on paper as such. ;) Theres always a mobile or a computer or laptop or netbook when I need writing. :D
So here are a couple of the practice shots. Hope you like them. :)
Cogito, Ergo Sum (I think, therefore I am)
Pipip, Ergo Sum (I tweet, therefore I am)
And here are a couple of shots of something that I would like to preserve. :)
